The Fantasia in F minor by Franz Schubert , D .940 ( Op . posth. 103), for piano four-hands (two players at one piano), is one of Schubert’s most important works for more than one pianist and one of his most important piano works altogether. Schubert composed it in 1828, the last year of his life, and dedicated it to his pupil, Karoline Esterházy .

Musicologist Christopher Gibbs has characterized the work as "among not only his greatest but his most original" compositions for piano duet. [1]

Schubert began writing the Fantasia in January 1828 in Vienna . [2] The work was completed in March of that year, and first performed in May. Schubert's friend Eduard von Bauernfeld recorded in his diary on May 9 that a memorable duet was played, by Schubert and Franz Lachner . [3] The work was dedicated to Karoline Esterházy, with whom Schubert was in (unrequited) love. [4]

Disney settled on the film's concept as work neared completion on The Sorcerer's Apprentice , an elaborate Silly Symphonies short designed as a comeback role for Mickey Mouse (who had declined in popularity). As production costs grew higher, he decided to make a feature-length film with other segments set to classical pieces. The soundtrack was recorded using multiple audio channels and reproduced with Fantasound , a pioneering sound reproduction system that made Fantasia the first commercial film shown in stereophonic sound.

The film gained a huge cult following since its first release, and is notably important to film industry as a milestone in the creation of the modern "music video."

The host and narrator of the film, Deems Taylor, introduces each piece in the program and gives background on the original intent of the composer. There was no intent to deceive anyone into thinking that Disney's interpretation was the "original intent" of the composer.
